Old Fashioned Liquorice Bites

  • 4 tbsp. Canna-Butter
  • 2 tbsp. black strap molasses
  • 6 tbsp. whole wheat flour
  • ¾ tsp. black food colouring
  • ½ cup sugar
  •  ¾ tbsp. anise extract
  • ¼ cup dark corn syrup
  • pinch of salt (literally a pinch, less than 1/8 tsp.)
  • ¼ cup sweet condensed milk

  1. Line 8” square pan with waxed paper or parchment paper. Grease paper.
  2. Mix canna-butter, sugar, salt, molasses and corn syrup in medium heavy bottomed saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring constantly. Once mixture boils do not stir any more and allow to boil until temperature reaches between 240 degrees F and 265 degrees F (the higher the heat, the firmer the licorice).
  3. Remove from heat and stir in flour, anise flavouring and colouring. Mix well, then pour into prepared pan.
  4. Allow to cool, then cut into bites as desired.
  5. Allow to cool completely (as long as an hour) and wrap buboes individually in waxed paper. Store in the fridge.
